Pieśni Mozarta ujawniają, że jest dramaturgiem miniatury. Nawet jeśli nie kultywował tego gatunku systematycznie, to jednak kierował swe twórcze moce ku pieśniom na wszystkich etapach kariery. Jego pierwszy wysiłek w tym zakresie (obecnie utracony) został podjęty w wieku sześciu lub siedmiu lat i kontynuował go w nieregularnych odstępach czasu, aż do ostatniego roku życia. Niemniej jednak Mozart zwykle decydował się na napisanie pieśni tylko wtedy, gdy były na to specjalne okazje. Nawet przedmowa do pierwszego pełnego wydania jego pieśni, opublikowanego w 1799 r. przez Breitkopf & Härtel, określa je jako „dzieła okazjonalne”, podobnie jak Leipzig Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung w tym samym roku. Sam Mozart bez wątpienia uważał te genialne dzieła za „dzieła dla przyjaciół” i nie był skłonny uważać ich za szczególnie znaczące.
